Hello all,

Sorry for such late notice...I am giving a recital tomorrow, Wednesday, November 10th at noon. It is at the Old Church (1422 Southwest 11th Avenue
Portland, OR 97201-3304) and it is free. I would love to see you there. Bring friends and even lunch if you want. It will only be about an hour of beautiful music by some of my favorite composers~Debussy, Duparc, R. Strauss, Schubert and Puccini.

I am fortunate to have Richard Bower joining me as my piano player again and my sister Chelsea Howell has flown up from California with her clarinet to join me on a Schubert piece called "Shepherd on the Rock" I would love to share this time with you!! See you tomorrow.

Hello All,

I know it's last minute but I will be performing the Recordare duet from Verdi's Requiem tonight at Mc Menamins's Kennedy School. The proceeds will go to benefit the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Please come out for this very worthy event. The performance is at 7PM. I will be singing with mezzo soprano Beth Madsen Bradford and a string quartet from Classical Revolution PDX.
There will be a silent auction with over $3,000 worth of items to bid on.

Otello this weekend

I am performing with the Portland Columbia Symphony this weekend!! I'm really looking forward to it and hope that many of you will come out to cheer me on. The concert is called Brush up your Shakespeare and it will emphasize Shakespeare's sizable influence on many composers through the years. The music of Weber, Vaughn Williams, Verdi and Elgar will be performed throughout the evening with some fun Shakespeare dramatic selections from different Shakespeare plays sprinkled here and there.

The first performance is on Friday night at 7:30 at First United Methodist Church in Downtown Portland ~1838 SW Jefferson St.

The second performance will be in Gresham at 3:00 at the Mt. Hood Community College Theater~26000 SE Stark St.

Looking forward to Otello

Hello all,

I haven't communicated in awhile. Sorry about that. Busy summer filled with fun and singing. So since I've last communicated, I had the opportunity to sing for a fine group of people known as the Portland Bologna Sister City Association. Who knew that Portland had such a fine sister city. I showed up at a wonderful restaurant in the Pearl District called Piazza Italia. They closed the place to the public and this very warm, opera appreciating, loving, fun bunch of people took over the place. There was much fine wine and Italian exchanged that night. Mr. Angelo Carella was kind enough to invite me up to sing a few arias later in the evening along with dessert. I don't think I've ever had to sing in front of huge TV screens playing world cup soccer during my performances of Puccini arias. It was surreal and delightful all at once.

On November 20 & 22, I will be performing with the Portland Columbia Symphony. I will be singing two arias from Act IV of Verdi's Otello. "Brush up your Shakespeare" is the title of the series and the concerts will touch on the influence Shakespeare had on many musical creations. Other artists and composers will be featured as well. The Spring Fling at Moe's Sherman & Clay Recital Hall was a success. I debuted Strauss's Last Four Songs and it went very well. Deac Guidi and Leah Yorkston sang beautifully and with much passion. We had tons of fun presenting some highlights from The Marriage of Figaro. Performing bits and pieces from this comic opera left the audience wishing that we had put on the entire production. Such is the magic of a well crafted opera. Who knows... there might be a time in the near future when we actually do put on this opera in its entirety. We just need a few more characters, some funding, and a great venue. Stay tuned for more information.

In the mean time, please join us in Astoria, Oregon tomorrow for another Spring Fling opportunity. We will be at the Performing Arts Center on the corner of 16th and Franklin near Clatsop Community College at 3:00pm. I know the weather will be nice but don't let that deter you from enjoying a superb afternoon of music. Bring your friends!!

A Spring Fling

I hope that I will see you all at my recital set for Friday, April 3rd at 7:30 at Sherman Clay in the Pearl District and/or Sunday, April 5th at 3:00 at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center. We have been working hard to create an experience where recital goers can forget about the cares of the world for awhile. Deac Guidi and Leah Yorkston are still set to present this wonderful event with me as well as Richard Bower at the piano. There will be a $10 admission at the door. Deac will be singing some Vaughn Williams and Donaudy and Leah will sing some lovely Purcell songs. I am still planning on singing Richard Strauss's Last Four Songs. It's the hardest repertoire I've ever learned and I'm excited to finally be able to present it to you.

New Information!!!!

I wanted to let you all know a couple of dates that I would like you to keep open in April. I will be giving a recital with two other wonderful singers Leah Yorkston and Deac Guidi. We will be singing some selections from The Marriage of Figaro. I will also be performing Strauss's Last Four Songs and Deac and Leah will be singing some art song repertoire as well (TBA). Richard Bower will be our accompanist for this event. We will be giving two performances~one on Friday, April 3rd at 7:30pm at Moe's Sherman Clay in Downtown Portland. The other performance will be in Astoria on Sunday, April 5th, at 3:00pm at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) of Clatsop Community College. I had posted a different blog a few weeks back with dates for March but please disregard those dates.

Le Villi-Excellent Event

Hello All,

I think that I will just go ahead and say it...Le Villi was a great success!! We had two very full houses both nights and at the end the crowd went wild. They stood up and cheered and clapped us through three different curtain calls on Sunday night. What fun! I was so grateful and relieved that it went well. I hope that Vancouver Symphony embarks on this concert opera journey again in the near future. What a privilege to sing with Lance Ferguson and Richard Lippold. We made some great music together. The orchestra was remarkable and the chorus sang with great sensitivity and sincerity. What a great group of people. Salvador Brotons brought his usual passion and flamboyance to the podium. I will keep you all posted on my future singing engagements. I've got a few things in the hopper that I'm excited about, but I haven't nailed down the details yet. Blessings to all of you!!!

Le Villi is coming!!!!

I remember one day last May traveling to a church in Vancouver, Washington to sing for Salvador Brotons, conductor of the Vancouver Symphony. Maestro Brotons was one of my professors at Portland State University and I also sang as a professional singer under his baton with Vancouver Symphony when we presented a fine evening of Strauss music a few years back. It was so good to see him again. I sang a couple of arias for him because he hadn't heard me in a few years. It was a great time of singing and and getting reacquainted with him. We visited after the singing and he mentioned that for the first time ever in the history of Vancouver Symphony that he would like to perform an opera in concert. He suggested that I might sing the leading role which was Anna in the opera Le Villi. It's so hard to obtain opportunities to actually perform roles in their entirety in this region (especially when one is a free agent like me). I was absolutely thrilled that he would consider me for this role. I can't believe that the time to perform this opera is actually upon me. It's this weekend already (April 19th and 20th... see ticket information in previous blog). I hope that many of you can take time out of your very busy schedules to come hear this fantastic work. It's one of Puccini's very first operas and it's quite lovely.

"Puccini wrote this opera while still a student to participate in a competition announced by Sonzogno in 1882. Although he failed to win, this opera attract the attention of Giulio Ricordi who not only published the score, but also arranged the première at Teatro del Verme in Milán. The première was so successful that the Teatro della Scala accepted it for the following season. With this production Ricordi established a lasting relationship with Puccini and commissioned him to compose his second opera, "Edgar"." Tickets can be purchased by credit card over the phone at 360-735-7278 or at the box office at least one hour before performances. Performances are at Skyview High School concert hall.1300 NW 139th St, Vancouver, WA 98685.

I hope that you will attend. We are hard at work making it a great performance. I will post this information again as we get closer to the performance.

Hello All,

My goodness...it's been way to long since I last posted. I guess I haven't worked blogging into my daily list of things to do. I just talked with Salvador Brotons (conductor of the Vancouver Symphony) on the phone today. He is so excited about the performance of Le Villi that we will be performing in April together. His exuberance is contagious. He wants the performers to memorize it so that we can be free to do some light blocking. I think that 's a great idea. The music is so beautiful. This is the first opera that Puccini ever wrote and it's been so fun to hear familiar themes in Le Villi that I've definitely heard in his later operas. It's like so many of his first brilliant ideas were born in this earliest work.

I'm excited to report that Richard Lippold (baritone) will sing the role of Guglielmo Wulf (Anna's Father) and Lance Ferguson (tenor) will sing the role of Roberto (Anna's love interest). This opera has a very small cast. It's just the three of us, a narrator (no singing) and a chorus. I will tell the story of the opera in a later blog.

Remember that the performances for this opera are on April 19th and 20th. When I receive ticket information I will let you know.

Whew!!! Finally, I'm a blogger. I think that everyone else in the world has already embarked on this technological journey of sharing information. I'm just a bit behind the times.

I want to keep those of you who read this informed on any singing engagements that I have coming up. Right now I'm set to sing the opera Le Villi with the Vancouver Symphony (Washington) on April 19th and 20th. It's one of Giacomo Puccini's earliest operas. As I'm learning it, I feel like I'm uncovering a fabulous jewel. The music is really growing on me. There are so many beautiful lines in this work. I will be singing the role of Anna in this concert presentation. As it gets closer, I will share more of what the opera is about and who will be singing in it with me. I'm also looking forward to working with Salvador Brotons again. He is a brilliant conductor who resides in Spain. He always brings passion and charisma to any work that he has conducted.

I have a few other possible engagements waiting in the wings right now. I haven't signed the contracts yet, but as soon as I do I will let you know what those are. Please e-mail me and share your thoughts about my new website. I look forward to hearing from you!
